Triumphant Titans – Round Two of National Speedo League
At last Saturdays National Speedo League Round 2 gala the Titans blasted their way into the final with pride, passion and belief. The tension was immense - but cheered on by our small but vocal army of supporters each and every Titan swimmer rose to the occasion – sometimes swimming up 2 full age groups and swimming in up to 8 events.
It was truly one of those great achievements – where the underdog rises to the occasion and against the odds succeeds. It reminded me of my decade and a half of supporting Wimbledon Football Club – perhaps we are the new “Crazy Gang”!
Against Clubs such as Bolton, Garston, Ellesmere Port, Altrincham and Leyland Barracudas with decades of history and experience – not to mention hundreds of swimmers to select from – the Titans battled their way into joint second position – securing enough points to put us into the final on December 13th. This was achieved despite the fact that we were robbed of 5 points in the 11/u medley relay by a disqualification which clearly should not have been.
The final team points were as follows :
| Bolton | 208 |
| Ellesmere College Titans | 155 |
| Garston | 155 |
| Altrincham | 119 |
| Ellesmere Port | 106 |
| Leyland Barracudas | 96 |
Inspired once again by Darren Mew’s presence our young Titan team swam their way to a total of 10 Personal Bests and 10 First places.
Congratulations Team
So congratulations to the entire team of Isobel Mellings, Jamie Thomas, Courtney Pickstone, Alfie Pardoe, Hannah Greene, Elliot Hughes, David Main, Ottilie Fairhurst, Lauren Bond, Annie Jones, Annie Mellings, Daniel Howell, Kate Parry, Helena Kocourkova, James Norman and Darren Mew.
Each and every member of the team should feel immensely proud of what they collectively achieved on Saturday. It was a truly David versus Goliath moment. The elation I felt was similar to when Wimbledon FC were first promoted into the Football League – they went on to reach the Premiership and win the FA Cup within the following 8 years. Remember there are bigger mountains to climb and make no mistake - we are going to climb them!
The Titans now move into the final 2 on December 13th where they will face Bolton, Northwich, Ashton Central, Royston and Whitchurch.
