Titans Launch Open Water Training
With the recent increase in popularity of Competitive Open Water Swimming and its introduction in Beijing 2008 as an Olympic event - the Titans have made available a programme of open water training aimed at acclimatising existing proficient 1500m distance swimmers to the variances of open water.
Although most people now think of competitive swimming as a pool programme, competitive swimming has its roots in open water.
Captain Webb became the first person to swim the English Channel in 1875, undertaking much of his training in the river Severn. Furthermore the first four Olympic swimming competitions of 1896, 1900, 1904 were all held in open water.
Open water swimming was officially recognised by FINA, the international swimming federation in 1986 and was reintroduced into the Olympic programme with the 10km marathon race at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Titans have Teamed up with Trismart
To provide distance swimmers with the maximum opportunity to fulfil their potential the Titans have teamed up with Trismart – a specialist local triathlon club. On occasional Tuesdays (6.15pm-7.15pm) throughout the months of July and August Open Water training will take place with Trismart at the Ellesmere Mere.
Open water swimming will be restricted to swimmers in the Competitive Training Squad, aged 11+ with a minimum long course PB for 1500m of 20:00.00
Wetsuits will need to be worn during all swims. No wetsuit...no swim!
A safety boat will be available at each open water training session to provide a platform for recovery and continual assessment.
Titan swimmers wishing to participate will be charged an additional fee of £3 per session paid to Trismart to cover their insurance costs.
Further info and rules can be found on the Trismart website (www.trismart.org.uk).
